About Newark / Glasgow

Newark is located in New Castle County about 12 miles southwest of Wilmington and approximately halfway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. No other city in Delaware offers quite the historical significance that Newark has to offer.  Among the most recognizable, the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge, where the new Stars and Stripes flag was flown, and the first graduates of the University of Delaware (called Newark Academy at the time) who were three signers of the Declaration of Independence: George Read, Thomas McKean, and James.

It has been the home to a variety of manufacturers including paper mills, fibers, military tanks, automobiles and more.  The town also for a brief time had a large canning and shipping business.  Despite the abundant industry, Newark retains the charm of small town America in its downtown business district. Downtown Main Street is home to shops, restaurants, and community centers and eagerly celebrates various holidays throughout the year, closing traffic for festivals and parades.  The population is just over 30,000 with nearly 9,000 households, about half of which live in the city.
